Dental Extractions
At Family Dental Care of Oak Park, our first goal is always to save your natural tooth whenever possible. But when a tooth is too damaged, too infected, or no longer predictable to keep, a dental extraction can be the healthiest way to relieve pain and protect the rest of your smile.
Our team focuses on making the process as comfortable and stress-free as we can—starting with a careful evaluation, clear communication, and gentle care.
What is Transillumination?
Transillumination works by shining a bright, focused light through your tooth. Healthy enamel and dentin allow light to pass through evenly, while cracks, cavities, or other irregularities block or scatter the light. This creates a contrast that makes these issues much easier to spot—often before they’re visible on X-rays.
When is a tooth extraction needed?
A dental extraction may be recommended if a tooth is:
- Severely decayed or broken beyond repair
- Infected and cannot be predictably treated with other procedures
- Loose from gum disease (bone loss)
- Cracked below the gumline
- Causing crowding and needs to be removed for orthodontic reasons
- A wisdom tooth that is problematic, infected, or difficult to keep clean
If you’re in pain, have facial swelling, or suspect an infection, please contact our office right away—these situations can worsen quickly if left untreated.
Your comfort comes first
Many people feel nervous about extractions. That’s normal. We’ll walk you through what’s happening, answer questions, and help you feel at ease before we begin.
Most extractions are performed with local anesthetic to thoroughly numb the area. We also use modern techniques and technology—such as digital x-rays to plan carefully and keep treatment precise.
Simple vs. surgical extractions
Not all extractions are the same:
- Simple extraction: A visible tooth is gently loosened and removed.
- Surgical extraction: A tooth may be broken, below the gumline, or impacted and requires a more involved approach.
If your case is more complex, we’ll explain all options and, when appropriate, coordinate care so you get the safest, most predictable treatment.
What to expect at your extraction visit
Your appointment usually includes:
- Evaluation and imaging (as needed) to confirm the best plan
- Numbing and comfort measures to keep you relaxed
- Gentle removal of the tooth with careful attention to the surrounding bone and tissues
- Site care (gauze instructions, and sometimes stitches if needed)
- A clear aftercare plan so you know exactly what to do at home
Healing and aftercare tips
After an extraction, your body forms a natural clot to protect the area and begin healing. We’ll give you specific instructions, but common guidelines include:
- Bite on gauze as directed to control bleeding
- Avoid spitting, using straws, or smoking for the first 24–48 hours
- Eat soft foods and chew on the opposite side
- Use cold compresses for swelling (especially the first day)
- Keep the area clean, and follow instructions for rinsing/brushing
If you experience increasing swelling, fever, worsening pain after initial improvement, or anything that concerns you, call us right away.
Replacing a missing tooth
Removing a tooth is often just one step in the plan. To protect your bite and prevent nearby teeth from shifting, we may recommend discussing replacement options such as:
- Dental implants
- Bridges
- Dentures or partials
We’ll help you understand the pros and cons of each option based on your health, timeline, and goals.
